Do you want to work as a teacher in the great state of Alaska? If that’s the case, you have come to the correct place. A short article on the processes of becoming a teacher in Alaska may be found below.

Step 1: Complete a Teacher Preparation Program that has been approved.

Educators must have at least an undergraduate degree to teach in the United States. To get certification in Alaska, students must complete a state-approved teacher education program. The Alaska Department of Education publishes a Directory of Certified Teacher Education Programs. Although Alaska does not specify any particular course or semester-hour requirements for an Initial Certificate, each college or university teacher education program will have unique characteristics.

Curriculum and field experiences are the two main components of teacher education programs. Instruction on teaching core skills, pedagogy (the science of teaching), and training students to investigate, design, and execute learning experiences in their field of study are often included in the curriculum. Field observations, internships, student teaching, or a combination of all three are often included in field experiences. For further information on particular criteria, contact your teacher education program or the Department of Education.

Step 2: Pass the Requisite Exams

To become a licensed teacher, you must pass a series of standardized tests. Alaska requires applicants to pass the Praxis 1, the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, or an equivalent fundamental competence exam from many other U.S. states to get an Initial Certificate.

The Initial License and the five-year, renewable Professional License are Alaska’s two essential teaching licenses. You must teach for at least two years, finish an educator preparation program, and take appropriate courses to advance from the Initial to the Professional License. Educators who have acquired National Board certification can also apply for a Master Educator License (valid for ten years and renewable).

Step 3: Apply for an Alaska teaching credential.

Candidates must apply for a license with the following documentation once they have completed all of the procedures for Alaska teacher certification:

  • Certified Transcripts Validating a bachelor’s degree documentation and completing a teacher training program.
  • A teacher preparation program official’s institutional endorsement for a license
  • For a background check, a completed fingerprint card is required.
  • Passing scores on an authorized basic competence exam must be verified.
  • Non-refundable fees must be paid.
  • For more information on the application procedure, visit the Department of Education and Early Development’s website.
