How to Change the DNS Server on Android and iPhone

Changing the DNS server on your Android or iPhone can offer a range of benefits from improved internet speed to enhanced online security. The process is relatively simple, but it may appear daunting especially for those who are not technically savvy. Here’s a step-by-step guide on changing the DNS server on Android and iPhone.

DNS, or Domain Name System, is responsible for converting domain names (such as google.com) to IP addresses that allow communication between computers. In most cases, the DNS server of your internet service provider (ISP) is automatically used by your smartphone to carry out this task. However, there are many third-party DNS services that promise faster and safer internet experience.

Changing DNS on Android

Step 1 – Open settings: Open the settings app on your Android phone by tapping on the gear icon or simply swiping downwards from the home screen.

Step 2 – Tap on the Wi-Fi network: Under the ‘Connection’ or ‘Network and Internet’ section, tap on the Wi-Fi network that you are currently connected with.

Step 3 – Modify network settings: Scroll down to find the ‘IP settings’ tab, and tap again to reveal the options. Select the ‘Static’ tab (instead of DHCP) and proceed to enter the preferred DNS server address in the given field. It is recommended to use a reliable and secure DNS service, such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1).

Step 4 – Save changes: Once you have entered the DNS address, tap on the ‘Save’ button, and you’re done. Keep in mind that some Wi-Fi networks may have a captive portal, which may prevent you from modifying the network settings – in this case, you may need to use another network.

Changing DNS on iPhone

Step 1 – Open settings: From the home screen, tap on the settings app to open it.

Step 2 – Tap on Wi-Fi: Select the ‘Wi-Fi’ option from the list.

Step 3 – Modify network settings: Find the Wi-Fi network that you are currently using and tap on the ‘i’ icon next to it. Scroll down and select ‘Configure DNS’.

Step 4 – Add DNS server: Select the ‘Manual’ option and tap on ‘Add Server’. Enter your preferred DNS server IP address (e.g., 1.1.1.1) and repeat the process to enter a second DNS server address if available. Tap the ‘Save’ button when done.

Step 5 – Restart Wi-Fi: After entering the DNS server addresses, exit the settings app and reboot your Wi-Fi connection by turning it off and on again.

Benefits of Changing DNS Server

Changing the DNS server can offer several benefits, such as:

– Faster internet speed: Some third-party DNS services promise faster internet experience by reducing the time it takes for your device to resolve domain names.

– Improved security and privacy: Some DNS services (such as Cloudflare) provide advanced security measures such as DNS over HTTPS. This can prevent hackers or ISPs from accessing your browsing data or redirecting you to fake websites.

– Accessing geo-restricted content: Changing DNS servers can enable you to access content that may be restricted in your area due to regional restrictions or online censorship.

Conclusion

Changing the DNS server on your Android or iPhone can improve your internet speed, privacy, and security. By following the above steps, you can easily change your DNS server to a reliable, fast, and secure third-party service. Keep in mind that you may need to experiment with different DNS services to find the one that offers the best performance for your location and network.
