These Small Towns in Virginia Have the Best Historic Districts

Virginia, steeped in American history, beckons travelers with its charming small towns, each boasting unique historic districts that offer a window into the past. From colonial-era architecture to Civil War battlefields, these picturesque locales offer a rich tapestry of American heritage.

One such gem is Abingdon, located in the southwestern part of the state. Established in 1778, Abingdon is renowned for its well-preserved historic district that is lined with buildings dating back to the 18th century. Visitors can explore the Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, and enjoy performances in a building where Gregory Peck and Ernest Borgnine once graced the stage.

Over in central Virginia, Lexington stands out with its charming historic district. The presence of Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University adds to its historical landscape. Antebellum homes and Stonewall Jackson’s house adorn the tree-lined streets, offering history buffs a rich narrative of pre-Civil War life.

Not to be missed is Middleburg, nestled in Loudoun County and known as the nation’s horse and hunt capital. Middleburg’s historic district exudes an equestrian flair evident in its architecture and cultural events. Historic sites like the Red Fox Inn & Tavern, which has operated since 1728, provide a cozy gateway to exploring local lore.

In the northern region is Culpeper, which perfectly encapsulates small-town charm with its vibrant historic downtown. The area is dotted with exquisite buildings from different eras – Victorian, Italianate, and Colonial Revival designs contribute to an eclectic mosaic of historical architecture.

Finally, Staunton deserves mention for its beautifully preserved downtown district that transports visitors back to turn-of-the-century America. It’s home to a variety of architectural styles — Gothic Revival, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne — seen in buildings like the Blackburn Inn and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Virginia’s charming small towns with their historic districts offer more than just a peek into America’s past; they invite exploration into stories that have shaped the nation. Whether it’s through cobbled streets or tours of heritage homes, each town’s unique narrative contributes to understanding the United States’ rich history.
