JBL Grip Bluetooth Speaker Review: A Can Full of Fun and Audio Excitement

Spread the love

In the ever-evolving world of portable audio, the JBL Grip emerges as a standout contender that reimagines what a compact Bluetooth speaker can be JBL has crafted a speaker that’s not just about sound, but about an entire lifestyle experience. Drawing inspiration from the sleek proportions of a seltzer can, this innovative device promises to deliver more than just audio – it offers a unique blend of design, functionality, and portability.

Design and Aesthetics

The JBL Grip immediately catches the eye with its distinctive cylindrical shape inspired by food and drink industry research showing consumers prefer slim and tall soda can-style designs. Available in a vibrant array of colors including Black, Blue, Pink, Purple, Red, Squad (camo), and White, the speaker is anything but ordinary. Its textured exterior isn’t just about looks – it provides an excellent grip, living up to the speaker’s name.

Durability and Portability

Durability is where the JBL Grip truly shines. With an impressive IP68 dust and waterproof rating, this speaker can be submerged in 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. JBL even describes it as ‘drop-proof’, making it perfect for beach days, camping trips, or any adventure. Weighing just 385 grams, it strikes an ideal balance between robustness and lightweight design.

Sound and Performance

While compact, the JBL Grip doesn’t compromise on audio quality. It delivers surprisingly decent sound for its size, offering clear, well-balanced, and decently punchy audio. However, users should temper expectations – it won’t match the power of larger speakers like the Flip 7. The speaker does have some limitations, particularly at higher volumes where music can sound somewhat compressed.

Smart Features and Connectivity

The JBL Portable app adds significant value to the Grip experience. Users can enjoy features like:

  • Customizable lighting effects (freeze, bounce, trim, switch, and neon)
  • A seven-band equalizer with custom sound tuning
  • Stereo pairing with a second Grip
  • Auracast connectivity for linking multiple compatible speakers

Battery and Practicality

Battery life is respectable for its size. You can expect up to 14 hours of playtime with low volume and minimal lighting, though typically around 12 hours during normal use. A full recharge takes approximately 3 hours.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Excellent element protection
  • Attractive design
  • Customizable lighting
  • Portable and lightweight

Cons:

  • Limited bass response
  • Some audio compression at high volumes
  • No integrated microphone for hands-free calling

Conclusion

The JBL Grip is more than just a speaker – it’s a lifestyle accessory. It’s an easy-to-grab portable Bluetooth speaker that won’t weigh you down, perfect for casual outdoor hangs, desk listening, or day trips. While it may not be the most powerful speaker on the market, it offers exceptional value for those seeking a fun, durable, and stylish audio companion.
