Step 1: Check Current Version of Ubuntu

Before updating Ubuntu, it is essential to know the current version of the operating system. To check the version, open a terminal window and enter the following command:

“`
lsb_release -a
“`

This will display the current Ubuntu installation version.

Step 2: Backup Important Data

It is always recommended to backup important data before updating Ubuntu. Updating the operating system could result in data loss or software incompatibility issues. Hence, create a backup of important data to prevent data loss.

Step 3: Update Ubuntu Package Lists

The first step in updating Ubuntu is updating the package lists. This is done by entering the following command:

“`
sudo apt-get update
“`

This command updates the package lists from the Ubuntu repositories.

Step 4: Upgrade the Ubuntu Packages

Once the package lists are updated, it is time to upgrade the installed packages to the latest available versions. This is done using the following command:

“`
sudo apt-get upgrade
“`

This command installs the latest version of the packages that are already installed in the operating system.

Step 5: Upgrade Ubuntu to a New Release

Ubuntu also releases new versions periodically, which come with new features and security updates. To upgrade Ubuntu to a new release, enter the following command:

“`
sudo do-release-upgrade
“`

This command upgrades Ubuntu to the latest available version.

Step 6: Restart the System

Once the system is updated, it is recommended to restart the system to ensure that all the changes take effect. To restart the system, enter the following command:

“`
