How to Take Apart a Track Bicycle

Track bicycles, also known as fixed-gear or fixie bikes, are popular among cyclists for their simplicity and direct connection between the rider’s input and the bike’s performance. However, like any other type of bicycle, track bikes require regular maintenance and occasional disassembly for thorough cleaning or part replacements. In this article, we’ll show you how to take apart a track bicycle step-by-step.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, gather all the necessary tools you will need for the task. This may include:

– Allen wrenches (various sizes)

– A wrench set or an adjustable wrench

– Chain breaker tool

– Floor pump

– Bicycle tire levers

– A repair stand or a way to keep your bike stable while working on it (optional)

Step 2: Remove the Chain

Start by removing the chain from your track bike. Use a chain breaker tool to push out one of the chain’s pins and then reconnect the chain using a master or quick-link if available.

Step 3: Remove the Wheels

Deflate the tires using your floor pump and then pop out both wheels using your wrench set. Begin with the rear wheel; first, loosen the nuts that hold it in place using your wrench or an adjustable wrench. Once both wheels are removed from the frame, set them aside.

Step 4: Remove Tires and Tubes

Using a tire lever, pry one side of each tire off its respective rim. Remove both tires and inner tubes from their rims.

Step 5: Dismantle Brake Components (If Equipped)

Some track bikes may have brakes for additional control during races or riding on roads. Use an Allen wrench to remove any brake calipers, levers, and cables from your bike.

Step 6: Unscrew Pedals

Using a pedal wrench or an adjustable wrench, unscrew your track bike’s pedals. Note that the left pedal usually has a reverse thread.

Step 7: Remove Crank Arms and Chainring

Depending on your track bike model, you will need either an Allen wrench or a specialized crank extractor tool to remove the crank arms. Once unscrewed, you can slide out the chainring as well.

Step 8: Detach the Saddle and Seatpost

Loosen the seatpost clamp bolt using an Allen wrench and then remove the saddle and seatpost together from your frame.

Step 9: Disassemble the Steering Components

Start by loosening the top cap on your stem using an Allen wrench. Then remove your handlebars, check if they have any handlebar tape or grips that need to be removed too. Next, unscrew the stem from the steering tube using an Allen wrench and remove it from your bike frame.

Step 10: Carefully Separate Fork From Frame

Finally, gently slide your fork out of your bike’s head tube, completing the disassembly of your track bicycle.

By following these steps, you can successfully take apart a track bicycle. Remember always to keep track of all removed components during disassembly for easier reassembly afterward. Additionally, use this opportunity to inspect, clean, or replace any worn components before putting your bike back together for improved performance and longevity.
