How to Make a Ruff: 15 Steps

The ruff is a distinct and iconic accessory that dates back to the Renaissance era. It was worn around the neck as a symbol of wealth and fashion, and was made from various materials such as linen, lace, and even feathers. If you’re interested in making your own ruff for a costume or historical reenactment, here are 15 steps to guide you through the process.

1. Gather materials: For this project, you will need fabric (linen or cotton), thread, a sewing needle, scissors, pins, an iron, and measuring tape.

2. Select the fabric: Choose a fabric that is light, malleable, and easy to work with. Linen is historically accurate and highly recommended.

3. Measure your neck: Use a measuring tape to determine the circumference of your neck. Add one inch for seam allowance and record the measurement.

4. Cut the fabric: Measure the width you want for your ruff (typically 3-6 inches), then multiply that number by three to determine the length of the fabric strip. Cut the strip according to your measurements.

5. Hem the edges: Fold over each edge of the strip by ¼ inch and iron to create creases. Then fold again by ¼ inch and sew along the edges using a straight stitch to create clean hems.

6. Create attachment points: On one short end of the strip, fold over approximately ½ inch of fabric and sew it down, leaving one side open to create an attachment point for later use.

7. Sew parallel lines: Along the length of your strip, sew parallel lines at equal intervals (approximately every third inch) using a straight stitch or a gathering stitch if your machine has this setting. These lines will serve as the guides for gathering.

8. Gather the fabric: Starting at one end of each parallel line, gently pull the thread to create a ruffled effect. Slide the fabric along the thread to even out the gathers until you’ve reached your desired level of fullness.

9. Calculate the collar length: Use your initial neck measurement plus one inch for seam allowance to determine the collar length.

10. Cut and prepare collar strip: Cut a strip of fabric the length of your collar length and approximately 1.5 inches wide. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and sew along the long edge, leaving both short ends open.

11. Attach ruff to collar: Turn your collar strip inside out and pin the gathered edge of your ruff to one side of your collar, evenly spacing the gathers along the entire length.

12. Sew ruff to collar: Sew along the pinned edge, attaching the ruff to your collar, using a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch for added strength.

13. Close collar with fastening: Sew velcro strips or hook-and-eye closures onto both open ends of the collar strip, ensuring they align when closed around your neck.

14. Iron and neaten: Press your completed ruff with an iron, taking care not to crush the gathers too much. Trim any loose threads for a neat appearance.

15. Try on and admire: Place your finished ruff around your neck, fasten it securely, and admire your beautiful handiwork!

Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your very own Renaissance-style ruff in just 15 steps. Wear it proudly at your next costume event or historical reenactment, showcasing both your style and craftsmanship.
