How to Change Your Local Host Name

Local host name is the name given to your computer on a local network. It is used to identify your computer on the network and allows other devices to communicate with it. If you want to change your local host name, you can do so easily with few simple steps. In this article, we will guide you on how to change your local host name on Windows and Mac.

Changing Local Host Name on Windows

Step 1: Open Control Panel

Click on the Start Menu, and search for “Control Panel”. From the Control Panel, select the “System and Security” option.

Step 2: Click on System

From the “System and Security” window, select the “System” option.

Step 3: Click on Change Settings

Under the “Computer name, domain and workgroup settings” section, click on the “Change settings” option.

Step 4: Change Computer Name

From the “System Properties” window, select the “Computer Name” tab. Here, click on the “Change” button.

Step 5: Enter New Computer Name

Enter the new computer name you want to give to your computer. Ensure that you don’t use any special characters or spaces in the name.

Step 6: Restart System

Once you have entered the new computer name, click on the “OK” button. You will be prompted to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Changing Local Host Name on Mac

Step 1: Open System Preferences

Click on the Apple icon on the top left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences”.

Step 2: Click on Sharing

From the System Preferences window, click on the “Sharing” option.

Step 3: Change Computer Name

Under the “Computer Name” section, you will see the current host name of your computer. Type in the new host name you want to use.

Step 4: Restart System

Once you have entered the new host name, close the System Preferences window and restart your computer. Your new host name will be applied after the restart.

Changing your local hostname is a simple process that can be done easily on both Windows and Mac. By following the steps given above, you can change your local host name and make it unique for your local network.
