How to Bore Sight a Rifle: 5 Steps

Bore sighting a rifle is an essential step to ensure accuracy and precision when shooting. It’s the process of aligning the barrel of the rifle with the sight, allowing you to hit your target accurately. This article will guide you through the 5 steps required to bore sight your rifle effectively.

1. Prepare the Rifle

The first step in bore sighting is to make sure that the rifle is properly prepared. Begin by ensuring that it is completely unloaded and that there is no ammunition in the magazine or chamber. Position the rifle on a steady surface, such as a shooting bench or sandbags, to hold it in place during the bore sighting process.

2. Remove the Bolt

To gain access to the bore of your rifle, remove the bolt according to your specific model’s instructions. This step may vary depending on the type of firearm you are using, so consult your owner’s manual if necessary.

3. Look Down the Bore

Now that you’ve removed the bolt, you will be able to look down through the bore of your barrel towards your chosen target. While looking through the bore, adjust your gun’s position on its rest so that it’s pointing directly at your target. Once it’s in place, try not to move it for this entire process.

4. Adjust Your Sights

With your rifle pointed at your target, take a look through its sights. Compare their alignment with what you see when looking through the barrel itself. Your goal will be adjusting these sights so they match what you see in terms of target location when looking down at each method (sights and barrel).

While keeping an eye on where your barrel points relative to where your sights are aiming, make any necessary adjustments using windage and elevation knobs (found on riflescopes) or iron sights (as equipped). Do this until both views coincide perfectly.

5. Double-Check Your Alignment

Before you conclude the bore sighting process, be sure to double-check your alignment. Look through the barrel and the sights once again, making any final adjustments as needed. Once everything appears perfectly aligned in both views, replace the bolt in your rifle, and you’re all set!

Now that you’ve completed the bore sighting process, it’s essential to follow up with live-fire practice at a range to verify that your adjustments remain accurate when firing.

Bore sighting your rifle may take some patience, but it’s a critical step to accurately hitting your target. Follow these five simple steps, bear in mind that practice makes perfect, and enjoy a more precise shooting experience!
