An Insider’s View into the Edtech Market for Classroom/Behavior Management

Keeping the classroom under control is no easy feat, even for an experienced teacher who has tried every method. Kids can be rowdy and hard to manage on their best day. Unfortunately, most educators have found that sticker charts and behavior systems aren’t always effective at keeping these unwanted behaviors at bay. More teachers are beginning to turn to edtech for a better classroom and behavior management system.

What are early childhood, K-12, and higher education institution’s most pressing needs?

Many of the classroom and behavior management programs apply to the early childhood and K-12 areas. Younger children tend to be more susceptible to these unwanted behaviors compared to higher education students. With that in mind, it is important to note that these educators are going to need colorful and interactive platforms that catch the attention of the children.

The programs should target a number of specific behaviors that need to come under control, allowing teachers to reward or issue consequences as a result. Educators should be able to review the data of classroom management quickly and easily. It can be a great predictor of future outbursts and may demonstrate times during the day where teachers could alter the routine to minimize bad behavior.

How can edtech companies meet these needs?

In order to keep students engaged with the material, edtech companies need to design a program that will engage students. They might be able to design their own avatar, receive flashy graphics when they hit a goal, or some other visual incentive to continue. This is perhaps the most important part because students have to be willing to participate in order for it to be effective for educators.

Edtech companies also need to make it possible for teachers to target specific behaviors that are in line with school and classroom policies. They should be able to issue rewards or points for excellent behavior. At a quick glance, educators should have access to all of the logged data in the system to demonstrate if the program is truly effective for their students.

  • ClassDojo: This classroom management app can be a powerful tool when it comes to motivating students to maintain exemplary behavior. Teachers are able to give points or take them away when students don’t comply with the set expectations and rules of the classroom. Even better, parents are able to see this information quickly and easily.
  • Too Noisy: Do you have a rowdy class that often allows their volume to swirl out of control? Particularly for educators who have students with auditory sensitivities, the noise of the classroom may be overwhelming. Too Noisy demonstrates when the room is getting too loud with unique graphics that show how close you are getting to an intolerable level.
  • The Great Behavior Game: Designed for students in fifth grade or lower, The Great Behavior Game allows you to award points and penalties for specific behaviors. Use the scoreboard to issue rewards to winning students at various intervals throughout the day. Educators will love the ability to generate reports with the information for future reference.
