5 Mistakes that Professors Make with Technology

Implementing technology in the classroom can be a real learning process even for professors at the higher education level. It can lead to a lot of frustration and misuse of the devices, particularly when professors aren’t well trained. As a result, lots of mistakes might be made with the new technology that can significantly impact students. Here are five of the mistakes that professors most often make when it comes to the use of new technology.

Using technology they don’t understand

Incorporating technology into the classroom can be challenging enough for students. They must learn all new platforms and programs in order to complete their assignments. However, it becomes even more difficult when even the professor doesn’t understand the technology. This makes the learning process significantly more frustrating and tiresome for students who simply want to complete their coursework and submit it. Professors should always make it a priority to learn the basic functions of the technology they use.

Not making use of available technology

Most universities and colleges have plenty of technology at their disposal. From computer programs to tablets, there are lots of different options to choose from. Unfortunately, many professors will continue to opt for traditional teaching methods and ignore the availability of technology. This can cause many students to miss out because technology caters to almost all learning styles. Make sure you know what is available to you and then find creative ways to incorporate it into a lesson plan.

Reading lessons to students from technology

How many times have you attended a presentation where the lecturer simply read from each one of their slides? Technology isn’t just a new way for you to broadcast your lecture notes from the front of the room. You should be finding ways to use it creatively. Show videos, simulate a science experiment and play trivia games. All of these are far more interactive options than forcing students to sit through a dry class where a professor reads to them.

Sending out paper notices

Most professors have noticed how frequently students check their text messages and emails as they come into class. Despite seeing this, many teachers are still using paper notices to send out information to students. You can stop wasting so much paper and opt for a more environmentally-friendly way of reaching your students. Send out memos and notices via email where students constantly have access to them instead.

Using technology because they can

While you may have lots of technology available to you, that doesn’t mean that you should use it just because you can. All of the technology used in the classroom setting should serve a real purpose. Consider what needs each item can meet before deciding whether it is the right fit for your classroom. By choosing your technology wisely, you can make things less overwhelming for students and more effective for the classroom.
