4 Ways to Apply Moleskin

Moleskin is a soft, cotton fabric material with a strong adhesive backing that is commonly used to prevent and treat blisters, provide cushioning, and reduce friction on sensitive areas of the skin. It is an essential item in any hiker’s or runner’s first-aid kit. If you’ve never used moleskin before, we have compiled a list of four ways to apply it effectively.
1. Blister Prevention
One of the primary uses of moleskin is to prevent blisters from forming due to friction from shoes or other clothing items. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Clean the area: Before applying moleskin, ensure that your skin is clean and dry so that the adhesive will stick properly.
b. Cut a piece of moleskin: Measure and cut an appropriately-sized piece of moleskin to cover the area where friction is occurring.
c. Apply the moleskin: Remove the protective backing and gently press the adhesive side onto your skin, smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles.
d. Secure in place: If needed, you can apply medical tape or a bandage over the moleskin to ensure it remains in place during activity.
2. Blister Treatment
If a blister has already formed, you can still use moleskin as a form of treatment and protection. Here’s how:
a. Create a donut shape: Cut out a piece of moleskin that can cover the blister comfortably and cut a hole in the center to create a donut shape. This will protect the blister by redistributing pressure away from it while also providing cushioning.
b. Apply the donut-shaped moleskin: Remove the backing and place it on your skin with the hole positioned over the blister.
c. Cover with additional padding if needed: For extra cushioning, you can add another layer of moleskin or a soft foam pad on top of the donut.
d. Secure in place: Finally, apply medical tape or a bandage over the moleskin to keep it in place during activity.
3. Corn and Callus Relief
Moleskin can also provide relief for corns and calluses by reducing pressure and friction. Simply cut a piece of moleskin to fit the affected area and apply it directly to the skin, adhering to the cleaning, cutting, and application process outlined above.
4. Customized Cushioning
Moleskin can be customized to provide cushioning for various situations:
a. Insoles: To alleviate foot discomfort, create a custom moleskin insole by tracing your shoe’s insole onto a piece of moleskin and cutting it out. Place the moleskin inside your shoe with adhesive side down.
b. Padding for straps: To prevent rubbing from backpack straps or bra straps, cut strips of moleskin and apply them to the underside of the strap where it comes into contact with your body.
c. Sports equipment: Wrap handlebars of bicycles or grip areas on sports equipment with moleskin to reduce friction that can cause blisters or calluses.
No matter how you choose to use moleskin, make sure you always have some on hand in your first-aid kit as it is an incredibly versatile and practical solution for blister prevention, treatment, and avoiding skin irritation.
