When Your Car Heater Blows Cold Air

As the temperature drops outside, your car’s heater becomes one of the most important components to keep you warm and comfortable while driving. However, what do you do when your car heater blows cold air instead of the warm air you expect?

There can be several reasons why your car heater is not working properly. Here are some of the most common causes and how to fix them.

Low Coolant Level

The coolant in your car’s engine helps to circulate the warmth. If there’s not enough coolant, the heat cannot transfer to the heater core, causing the air to blow cold. Before anything, check the coolant level in your engine. If there’s a low level, you can top up the coolant container, but if you find yourself regularly topping up your coolant, there might be a more serious issue.

Thermostat Failure

A malfunctioning thermostat could cause your car’s heater to blow cold air as it regulates the vehicle’s cooling system. It prevents the cooling system from reaching the right operating temperature, which impacts the interior temperature. If the thermostat is faulty, replace it immediately.

Clogged Heater Core

Over time, the heater core in your car could get clogged with dirt, debris, or other foreign objects. This blockage reduces the amount of warm air that reaches the cabin area, which explains the low heater performance. You may need to perform a flush of your cooling system or seek professional assistance to unclog the heater core.

Malfunctioning Blower Motor

If your car’s blower motor isn’t working, your heater performance could suffer. The blower motor circulates air through the heating system and into the cabin, and if it’s faulty, you won’t get the warm air you need. The blower motor could need repairing or replacing.

Refrigerant Leak

Although it may sound strange, low refrigerant levels can trigger cool air blowing out of your heater. The refrigerant system regulates your car’s air conditioning and heating systems, and a leak could cause problems with the heating process. Have a professional check for leaks and recharge the refrigerant system.

In conclusion, when your car heater blows cold air rather than warm air, don’t ignore it. Check for these problems regularly, and have them fixed immediately to ensure your car’s heating system provides optimal performance. It will save you from discomfort, and potential breakdowns on the road.
