What Is an SOW (Statement of Work) in Project Management?

In project management, the Statement of Work (SOW) is one of the most important documents, as it lays out the scope of work to be completed, defines how the work will be performed, and sets the expectations for both the client and the project team.

The SOW is a written agreement that describes the work to be done in detail, including the deliverables, timelines, budgets, and roles and responsibilities of each party involved in the project. It outlines the project’s objectives, goals, and deliverables, along with the expectations for quality, schedule, and budget.

The goal of the SOW is to clearly define the scope of the project in a way that both the client and the project team can understand and agree on. The SOW should be specific and measurable, with clear milestones and deadlines for each deliverable, as well as a system for reporting progress and managing changes.

To create an SOW, the project manager must work with the client to identify the project goals and objectives, as well as the deliverables that will be required to achieve those goals. The project manager must also work with the client to establish a timeline and budget for the project, and to determine the resources that will be required.

Once the SOW has been created, it should be reviewed and approved by both the client and the project team before work begins. This will help ensure that everyone is on the same page and that there are no misunderstandings or disagreements about the scope of the project or the expected deliverables.

In summary, the SOW is a critical document in project management that lays out the scope of work to be completed, defines how the work will be performed, and sets expectations for both the client and the project team. It is a key tool for ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of all parties involved.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
