Ways to Fix “Your File History Drive Was Disconnected for Too Long” Error on Windows

If you rely on the File History feature on your Windows system for backing up important files, you may come across an error message that reads “Your File History drive was disconnected for too long” when attempting to access your backups. This error usually occurs when the external hard drive or USB flash drive that you use with File History becomes disconnected or switched off for a prolonged period, making it unable to save backups.

Here are some ways to fix the “Your File History drive was disconnected for too long” error:

1. Reconnect your File History drive: If the external hard drive or USB flash drive that you use with File History becomes disconnected, the first thing you should do is reconnect it to the system. Ensure that the drive is properly connected and turned on to make it visible to the system again.

2. Check your drive for errors: Sometimes the File History error can be caused by errors on the drive that you are using. Run a disk check to identify any issues on the drive. To do this, open File Explorer, right-click on the drive, and select ‘Properties.’ Click on the ‘Tools’ tab and select ‘Check’ under the ‘Error checking’ section. This will detect and fix any errors that may be affecting the drive.

3. Reconfigure your File History Drive: If you’ve recently reconnected your drive or updated it, you should reconfigure your File History drive. To do this, open the Windows Settings menu, select ‘Update & Security,’ and then click on ‘Backup’ in the left pane. Click on ‘More options’ and then ‘Turn off.’ Then, turn it back on again and select the correct drive for backing up.

4. Increase the File History backup frequency: In some cases, the File History error can occur when the backup frequency is set too low. To fix this, open the Windows Settings menu, click on ‘Update & Security,’ select ‘Backup,’ and then click ‘More options.’ Increase the frequency of the backup by selecting a shorter time period between backups. This will ensure that your backups are updated more frequently and help prevent any discrepancies.

5. Delete the File History Configuration: If none of these solutions above work, consider deleting the File History Configuration. To do this, open the Windows Settings menu, select ‘Update & Security,’ click on ‘Backup,’ and then click ‘More options.’ Under the ‘Related Settings,’ select ‘Back up using File History,’ and then click on ‘Advanced settings.’ Here, click on the ‘Stop using drive’ button, and then click on the ‘Delete’ button in the File History Configuration section. This will configure the backup process anew and likely fix the error as well.

In summary, the “Your File History drive was disconnected for too long” error can be a painful one for losing important backups. However, by following these fixes, you can regain access to your backups without losing data.
