Ways to Fix Windows SafeSearch When You Can’t Turn It Off
Windows SafeSearch is a built-in feature that helps protect your computer from harmful and inappropriate content when you browse the internet. Some individuals, however, find SafeSearch too restrictive and opt to disable it. If you’ve tried to turn off SafeSearch on your Windows device but have found the feature still active, here are a few ways to fix it.
- Log out of your Microsoft account
One possible reason why SafeSearch is still active on your computer even after disabling it in your browser settings is that you’re logged into your Microsoft account. By virtue of being a child account or a content level restriction, SafeSearch might have been enabled. To fix this, you need to log out of your Microsoft account and select the Stay Offline option that appears.
- Clear your browser history
Your browser might be retaining information that’s causing SafeSearch to remain active. You can clear your browser’s cache and cookies to remove any tracked data. Doing so should also clear SafeSearch settings and re-enable any previously hidden search results.
- Configure your family settings
If you’re using a Windows device with a family account, you might need to adjust your family settings to disable SafeSearch. Navigate to the Family and Other People section in your Windows settings and click the Manage Family Settings Online option. From there, select the profile you wish to edit, click on the Content restrictions tab, and disable SafeSearch.
- Modify the Registry Editor
If none of the above methods have worked, you may need to modify the Registry Editor. The Registry Editor is a substantial database within Windows 10 that contains important system information and settings. Modifying the database can come with significant risks and should, therefore, be attempted with care.
To modify the Registry Editor, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch the Registry Editor by typing Regedit in the Windows search bar.
Step 2: Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_SAFESEARCHMODE.
Step 3: Once you find the feature, double-click on it to open the Value Data window.
Step 4: Change the Value Data field to 0 then click OK to save the changes.
Step 5: Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
