The Two Different Kinds of Publication Mastheads

A masthead is a section of a publication that conveys information about the publication, such as its name, publication information such as the date, page numbers, etc. It is usually found on the first or last page of the publication. The masthead serves as a way for readers to quickly identify the publication and its content.

There are two different kinds of publication mastheads: editorial and production.

The editorial masthead includes the names and titles of the editorial staff responsible for the content of a publication. This masthead is typically found in newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals. It lists the executive editors, managing editors, section editors, and reporters, among others. The editorial masthead plays a crucial role in identifying who is responsible for the production, selection, and accuracy of the content readers are consuming, along with their contact details.

On the other hand, the production masthead (also called the technical masthead) lists the people responsible for the physical production of the publication. This includes the graphic designers, printers, layout artists, and the like. The production masthead provides information about the behind-the-scenes team that works to put together the publication physically. It typically appears on the inside back cover or on the second or third page of the publication.

The distinction between the two mastheads may not be always that visible, but it is essential in terms of identifying the responsible people behind every aspect of a publication. Both the editorial and production mastheads are important in helping readers identify the people who work behind the scenes to produce the publication they read. They provide a way for the readers to understand and appreciate the amount of hard work and resources that go into publishing every issue.

In conclusion, publication mastheads play a crucial role in helping readers identify the publication and its content. The two different kinds of mastheads, editorial and production, cater to two distinct aspects of the publication. While the editorial masthead lists the people responsible for creating the content, the production masthead provides information about the technical team that produces the publication physically. Understanding the roles of these two mastheads is essential in recognizing the efforts and hard work that go into publishing every issue of any publication.
