An onion is an essential ingredient in many recipes, adding a delicious and savory flavor to your dishes. However, you might not always use an entire onion at once, which leaves you with the question – how do you store the cut onion properly? Here are 14 steps to store a cut onion safely and make it last longer:

1. Clean your hands: Before handling any food, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to ensure cleanliness.

2. Use a sharp knife: A sharp knife ensures clean and even cuts, reducing the release of onion’s strong scent and preventing it from sticking to the knife.

3. Remove the skin: Peel off the outer layers of the onion, discarding any discolored or damaged parts.

4. Cut off the ends: Slice away both tips of the onion and discard them.

5. Cut as needed: Only cut as much of the onion as you need for your recipe, leaving the rest whole.

6. Store in an airtight container: Place the cut portion of the onion into an airtight container, like Tupperware or a glass storage container with a lid.

7. Use plastic wrap if needed: If you don’t have an appropriate container available, wrap the cut onion tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

8. Label it: Write down the date on the container or wrap to help you keep track of its freshness.

9. Keep it cool: Store the container with the cut onion in the refrigerator at temperatures below 40°F (4°C).

10. Separate from other produce: Keep onions separate from other fruits and vegetables to avoid spreading their smell through your fridge.

11. Check regularly for freshness: Inspect your stored cut onion periodically by checking for any discoloration or strong odors indicating spoilage.

12. Use within three to five days: Ideally, consume the cut onion within three to five days of storage to ensure the best flavor and freshness.

13. Freeze if necessary: If you’re unable to use the onion within the recommended time, consider freezing it. Make sure to chop it first and store it in a freezer-safe container or plastic bag.

14. Dispose when spoiled: When your cut onion exhibits signs of spoilage, such as a rancid smell or mold, discard it immediately and clean the container thoroughly.

By following these 14 steps, you can preserve the freshness and flavor of your cut onions while preventing waste. Now you can enjoy the versatility of onions in your recipes without worrying about proper storage and freshness.
