1. Define Your Objective: Before you create a hashtag, determine the purpose behind it. Is it for a marketing campaign, an event, or simply to generate conversation around a topic? Knowing your objective will help guide the creation process.

2. Research Existing Hashtags: Search for existing hashtags related to your topic or industry. This will not only help you see what’s already being used but also give you ideas for creating your own unique hashtag.

3. Keep it Short and Simple: Choose a hashtag that is short, simple, and easy to remember. A lengthy or complicated hashtag can be hard for users to remember or spell correctly, resulting in less engagement.

4. Make it Unique: Select a hashtag that is unique to your brand or specific to your campaign. This will make it easier for users to find and engage with your content.

5. Use Relevant Keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords associated with your topic or campaign into your hashtag. This will help users find your content when searching using those keywords.

6. Test it Out: Before you begin promoting your new hashtag, test it by searching on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to ensure that it hasn’t been used inappropriately or is too similar to another existing hashtag.

7. Be Consistent Across Platforms: Use the same hashtag across all your social media platforms for better brand recognition and consistency.

8. Promote Your Hashtag: Feature your chosen hashtag on marketing materials like emails, flyers, banners, and even in-store displays to create awareness and encourage users to get involved.

9. Engage With Users: Monitor the conversations around your hashtag and engage with users by liking, commenting, and sharing their posts.

10. Measure and Analyze Success: Use social media analytics tools like Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Keyhole.co to track how well your hashtag is performing in terms of engagement, reach, and other key metrics. This data can provide valuable insights and help you improve your hashtag strategy moving forward.

11. Include a Call to Action: Encourage users to join the conversation by including a call to action that invites them to use your hashtag in their posts or share their opinions on the topic.

12. Be Adaptable: Be prepared to adjust your hashtag strategy if it isn’t delivering the desired results. Monitor its performance regularly and make changes where necessary to ensure it remains relevant and effective.

Follow these 12 steps to create a successful hashtag that resonates with your target audience and helps you achieve your objectives!

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
