How to Set Up and Use Console Controllers With Steam

When it comes to playing games on PC, there are many ways to control your gameplay. While the good old keyboard and mouse combination is still the preferred choice for many, console controllers have also gained significant popularity among PC gamers. Steam is one of the most popular platforms for PC gaming, and it makes setting up and using console controllers with Steam a breeze. In this article, we will give you a step-by-step guide on how to set up and use console controllers with Steam.

Step 1 – Check Compatibility

The first step of setting up a console controller with Steam is to ensure that your controller is compatible with your PC. Some controllers like Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 controllers are supported natively by Steam, which means they will work seamlessly with no additional set up required. Other controllers may need additional drivers or software to work with Steam. Check your controller’s manual or do a quick online search to find out if it is compatible with Steam and what additional steps may be required.

Step 2 – Connect Your Controller

Once you’ve confirmed your controller’s compatibility, it’s time to connect it to your PC. Most controllers can be connected to your PC via USB cable or wirelessly using Bluetooth. If you’re using a wired controller, simply plug it into your PC’s USB port. If you’re using a wireless controller, you’ll need to pair it with your PC via Bluetooth. To do this, go to your PC’s settings, select Devices, and then Bluetooth & other devices. Turn on Bluetooth, and select Add Bluetooth or other device. Choose Bluetooth and follow the prompts to pair your controller with your PC.

Step 3 – Configure Your Controller Settings

Once your controller is connected to your PC, it’s time to configure its settings in Steam. Open Steam and click on the Big Picture Mode icon in the top-right corner. This will launch Steam’s Big Picture Mode, which is designed for a TV interface but works well for controllers. Click on Settings, then Controller Settings. Here, you can see the controllers that are connected to your PC. Click on your controller to configure its settings. You can customize the button mapping, sensitivity, and other settings to your liking.

Step 4 – Launch A Game And Start Playing

Once you’ve configured your controller’s settings, it’s time to start playing your favorite game. Launch a game that supports controller input, and your controller should work automatically. You can use your controller to navigate the game’s menus and control your gameplay. If you experience any issues with your controller, such as buttons not working correctly, make sure to check the game’s controller settings and your controller’s configuration in Steam.
