How to Make a Burn Barrel: 13 Steps

A burn barrel is a useful and practical way to dispose of yard waste, leaves, wood scraps, and other combustible materials. Rather than throwing these items away or letting them accumulate in your backyard, you can efficiently and safely burn them in a burn barrel. In this article, we will guide you through the 13 steps to making a burn barrel.

1. Find a suitable location: Choose a level area at least 50 feet away from any structures or combustible materials. Make sure it complies with local regulations and avoid areas where strong winds are common.

2. Acquire a barrel: Purchase or source a 55-gallon metal drum with a removable cover. This size is ideal for most burn barrel applications. Ensure there are no hazardous materials residue inside the barrel.

3. Clean the barrel: Thoroughly wash the inside of the drum with water and detergent to remove any contaminants.

4. Remove paint (optional): Burn barrels can be prone to rust due to intense heat from burning materials. Removing the original paint using a wire brush or electric sander can help slow down rusting and enhance longevity.

5. Drill ventilation holes: Using an electric drill with an appropriate bit size, drill multiple holes around the lower sides of the barrel about 4 inches apart from one another and about 3 inches from the bottom.

6. Drill drain holes: To prevent water accumulation, drill several smaller holes in the bottom of the barrel.

7. Create air intake holes on opposite sides of the base: Cut two larger rectangular openings near the base of the drum for better airflow and temperatures during burning sessions.

8. Install air intake covers: Place small metal grates or screens over each air intake hole; attach them securely with screws that are drill-resistant or weld them in place.

9. Construct an elevated platform (optional): Create an elevated platform for your burn barrel by stacking bricks, cinder blocks, or other heat-resistant materials. An elevated stand promotes better airflow and reduces scorching to the ground beneath.

10. Set up the burn barrel: Place the barrel on its elevated platform, ensuring it is level and secure. Make sure the air intake holes are facing upwind.

11. Install a removable cover (optional): Purchasing or creating a removable metal cover with handles not only helps contain sparks and ash but also ensures safety when extinguishing a fire.

12. Begin burning responsibly: Once your burn barrel is complete, use it to burn small amounts of dry yard waste. Start fires with kindling or newspaper and maintain a safe distance during burning sessions.

13. Proper extinguishing technique: After using your burn barrel, douse the embers with water and use a shovel to stir them until no glowing embers remain. Properly dispose of ash after it has completely cooled down.

Remember always to check your local regulations regarding open-air burning, and adhere to any restrictions or permits that may be required. By following these 13 steps, you’ll have an effective and safe burn barrel in no time.
