How to Keep Score for Tennis: 11 Steps
Step 1: Understand the scoring system
Tennis uses a unique scoring system, which consists of points, games, and sets. A match is won by the player or team who wins a predetermined number of sets.
Step 2: Start with love
At the beginning of a game, both players have no points. This is called “love” in tennis.
Step 3: Count points in increments of 15
The first point won by a player is scored as 15, the second point as 30, and the third point as 40.
Step 4: Win game by reaching “game point”
A player must win at least four points and be two points ahead of their opponent to win a game. If both players are tied at 40 (also known as “deuce”), they must win two consecutive points to secure the game.
Step 5: Use “advantage” terminology
If both players have scored three points (40-40), the next point winner has an “advantage.” If they win an additional point, they win the game. If not, the score returns to deuce.
Step 6: Track game wins in each set
A set is made up of games. Record each player’s game wins using numbers like “7” or “5” to show their progress during a set.
Step 7: Win a set by being two games ahead
To win a set, one player or team must have at least six games and have a two-game lead over their opponent.
Step 8: Tiebreak situations
If both players reach six games each in a set, most matches are settled using a tiebreaker. The first player to win seven points and have a two-point lead wins the tiebreak and thus the set.
Step 9: Differentiate between men’s and women’s matches
In most professional tennis matches, men compete in a best-of-five sets format, while women play in a best-of-three sets format.
Step 10: Record set wins
Track the number of won sets for each player; for example, “2-1” means two sets won by Player A and one set won by Player B.
Step 11: Declare the winner
The winner is the player who secures the required number of sets (either three out of five in men’s or two out of three in women’s) first.
Remember, practice makes perfect! Soon enough, keeping score in tennis will become second nature as you enjoy this incredible sport.
