How to Build a Router Table
Whether you’re an experienced woodworker or just starting, building a router table can be a rewarding project that enhances your skills and increases your workshop’s capabilities. A router table allows for precise, consistent cuts while offering improved safety and efficiency. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to build your own custom router table.
Materials and Tools Required:
– Plywood or MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
– Router plate
– Miter track
– T-track
– Wood screws
– Wood glue
– Level
Tools:
– Circular saw
– Jigsaw
– Drill and drill bits
– Screwdriver
– Tape measure
– Square
– Router with a straight bit
Step 1: Determine the Size of the Router Table
To begin, determine the size of your router table based on your specific needs and available workshop space. A standard size is typically around 24″x36″. Write down these dimensions so you can easily refer to them throughout the building process.
Step 2: Build the Tabletop
Start by cutting two pieces of plywood or MDF to the size of your desired tabletop. Glue both pieces together using wood glue, then secure them with evenly spaced wood screws. Allow enough time for the adhesive to dry as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3: Cut the Opening for the Router Plate
Using your router plate as a template, trace its outline onto the center of the tabletop. Carefully cut out this shape using a jigsaw. Make sure it fits snugly but is easily removable when needed.
Step 4: Install Miter Track and T-track
Decide where you want the miter track and t-track to be installed on your tabletop for guiding fence movements and holding accessories like feather boards. Cut an appropriate-sized groove for each using a router with a straight bit. Secure miter track and t-track into the grooves with wood screws.
Step 5: Build the Base
Now it’s time to build a sturdy base for your router table. Cut four legs and horizontal supports from plywood or MDF. Attach them together with wood screws and wood glue. Make sure your base is level and square before attaching it to the tabletop.
Step 6: Assemble the Fence
Construct a fence using a straight piece of plywood or MDF, attaching t-track on the backside for adjustability. Secure two smaller pieces as vertical supports on either side of your fence, ensuring they’re square with the tabletop.
Step 7: Mount the Router
Fit your router onto the router plate and secure it using appropriate mounting hardware provided by the manufacturer. Insert the plate into the opening you’ve cut earlier on your tabletop, double-checking for precise alignment.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
Now that your router table is assembled, add any additional accessories you require, such as a switch, feather boards, or dust collection system. Give your router table a thorough inspection to ensure everything is securely fastened and working smoothly.
Congratulations! You have successfully built a custom router table for your woodworking shop. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect years of faithful service as you create countless projects with ease and precision.
