How to Celebrate Festivus: 12 Steps

Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd, popularized by the television series “Seinfeld.” It was created as an alternative to the commercialized season of Christmas and offers participants a unique and fun way to celebrate the holidays. So, whether you’re new to the concept or a Festivus veteran, here are 12 steps to help you celebrate this quirky holiday.

1. Set up the Festivus pole: The Festivus pole is a simple aluminum pole that serves as an alternative to the traditional Christmas tree. You can either purchase one online or make your own using aluminum tubing.

2. Prepare a Festivus dinner: The most common dish served at Festivus celebrations is a meatloaf on a bed of lettuce, but feel free to get creative with a menu that suits your taste and preferences.

3. Invite friends and family: A big part of Festivus is spending time with loved ones, so invite your friends and family over for the celebration.

4. Engage in the Airing of Grievances: The Airing of Grievances is a tradition where everyone takes turns expressing disappointments or grievances from the past year in a lighthearted manner.

5. Perform Feats of Strength: After dinner, it’s time for Feats of Strength, where each participant shows off their strength and prowess in activities such as arm wrestling, tug-o-war, or any physical challenge.

6. Display some Festivus miracles: Throughout the event, point out any minor miracles (such as finding that lost sock) and refer to them as ‘Festivus miracles’.

7. Play festive games: To keep everyone entertained throughout the night, organize some fun games such as a pole limbo contest, Festivus trivia or even gift-wrapping contests.

8. Create Festivus-themed decorations: Get into the festive spirit by displaying Festivus-themed decorations around your house. Examples include banners that say “A Festivus for the rest of us!” or a Festivus-related centerpiece on your dinner table.

9. Dress casually: As Festivus is a reaction against the commercialism of Christmas, it’s appropriate to dress casually rather than wearing fancy holiday attire.

10. Use an alternative gift-giving approach: Since one of the reasons behind Festivus is to avoid consumerism, try adopting alternative approaches to gift-giving, such as donating to a charity in someone’s name or exchanging homemade gifts.

11. Have a sense of humor: Make sure that you approach the celebration with a sense of humor and lightheartedness – remember, this is supposed to be fun!

12. Wrap up Festivus with a solid group hug: End your Festivus celebration by engaging in a group hug to encourage warmth and camaraderie. This will reinforce the feeling of love and acceptance that Festivus aims to foster.

By following these 12 steps, you’ll be well on your way to organizing and enjoying an unforgettable Festivus celebration with friends and family. Remember, it’s all about having fun and embracing the spirit of the holiday! Happy Festivus!
