How to Make a Japanese Paper Lantern

Japanese paper lanterns, also known as “bonbori” or “chōchin”, are traditional lighting fixtures that originated in Japan and have since gained worldwide popularity for their distinctive design. They are used for various occasions such as festivals, cultural events, and even interior decorations. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making a simple yet beautiful Japanese paper lantern.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Colored or patterned Japanese paper (washi) or rice paper
2. Cardstock or thick construction paper
3. Glue or double-sided tape
4. Scissors
5. Ruler
6. Pencil
7. String or ribbon for hanging
Step 1: Prepare the Frame
First, you need to create the frame that will support your Japanese paper lantern. With your cardstock, measure and cut six strips of equal width – about 2 centimeters (or around 1 inch). The length of the strips should be the same as the height you want your lantern to be.
Using glue or double-sided tape, join three strips of cardstock together at their ends to form a triangle shape. Repeat this process for the remaining three strips, creating two separate triangles.
Step 2: Attach the Paper
Next, measure and cut your washi or rice paper based on your desired dimensions for the lantern (make sure its width is slightly shorter than your frame’s height). Now, place one triangle frame onto the center of the paper and apply glue to its edges.
Carefully wrap and attach the paper around the frame while making sure that it is evenly spread all-around. Then, stick the other triangle frame on top of the exposed edges of your wrapped paper and press gently to assure it adheres well.
Step 3: Secure All Ends with Tape or Glue
After sticking both frames to the paper, create a crisp edge by folding any excess paper over the frame and securing with tape or glue.
Step 4: Create a Hanger for Your Lantern
With your string or ribbon, cut a length long enough to create a loop that will hang your lantern. Fold the strip in half and tie an overhand knot at the end to form a loop. Using glue or tape, attach the ends of the ribbon to opposite corners of one of the triangle frames to create a hanger.
Step 5: Add Light (Optional)
While traditional Japanese paper lanterns were lit with candles, it’s much safer to use battery-operated LED lights or fairy lights. Simply place the light source inside your lantern, and you have successfully created your very own Japanese paper lantern.
