Installing a rivet nut can be a simple and effective way to add a strong, threaded insert to a variety of materials. These handy fasteners are used in a wide range of applications, from automotive body panels to home improvement projects. Follow these 11 steps to correctly install a rivet nut.

.Gather your materials: To install a rivet nut, you’ll need the rivet nuts themselves, a hole punch or drill bit, a drill, and a rivet nut tool or tool attachment.

.Choose the correct size rivet nut: Determine the appropriate size rivet nut for your project by considering the material thickness and the required thread size.

.Mark the installation location: Using a pencil or marker, mark the precise location where you’d like to install the rivet nut.

.Punch or drill the hole: Center your hole punch or drill bit over the marked location and create a clean hole through the material for the rivet nut to be inserted into. Ensure that the hole is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the rivet nut’s body while maintaining enough clearance from any edges.

.Clean any debris: After creating the hole, remove any debris surrounding it for a better fit and smoother installation.

.Insert the rivet nut: Align and lightly push the rivet nut into the drilled hole. Double-check that its flange is resting flush against it.

.Prepare your rivet nut tool: Attach the appropriate mandrel and nosepiece to your rivet nut tool or adapter based on your specific size requirements.

.Thread and secure the rivet tool mandrel onto each respective end of your intended fastener. Rotate clockwise until secured at an upright angle within its collet (retainer piece).

.Apply pressure to inner part of attachment over top of inserted fastening while directly compressing via expansion at base until tightly in place against either side.

.Release tension from threaded area by unscrewing counter-clockwise; this causes attachment’s mandrel (or “stem”) detachment plus successful completion of rivet nut installation aforementioned.

.Reinstall your fasteners, panels, or any other components that need to be connected using the secure, threaded connection provided by the installed rivet nut.

With these 11 steps complete, you’ll have successfully installed a rivet nut into your material. This robust fastening solution offers a versatile, long-lasting, and reliable method for attaching various components securely and sturdily across an array of applications.
