3 Ways to Be Okay with Having a Communist Friend

In today’s politically divisive climate, it’s common to encounter people with different beliefs. Of course, this includes having friends with political ideologies we may not completely agree with. One such example is having a friend who identifies as a communist. Instead of distancing yourself from your friend because of their political beliefs, discover ways to be okay with their communism. Here are three strategies that will help foster understanding and acceptance of their political views.

1. Educate Yourself on Communism

The first and foremost way to become comfortable with your friend’s political beliefs is to gain a deeper understanding of what communism actually is. Start by researching the history, principles, and theories underlying this socioeconomic and political ideology. This can be done by reading books, watching documentaries, or even attending lectures or discussions at your local university. By learning more about communism from various sources, you’ll develop a better understanding of why individuals choose to follow this ideology.

2. Keep an Open Mind and Engage in Constructive Conversations

With a foundational understanding of communism in place, you’ll be better equipped to engage in discussions about this topic with your communist friend (or anyone else). Make sure you approach these conversations with an open mind and genuine curiosity; this is not the time for judgment or personal attacks. Respect that others are entitled to their beliefs, even if they differ from yours.

Constructive dialogue can lead to an exchange of ideas, promote mutual learning, and ultimately strengthen your friendship. However, it’s essential to know when to take breaks from heavy political exchanges; you don’t want politics to consume every aspect of your friendship.

3. Focus on Shared Values and Common Ground

No matter what differences exist in the realm of politics, all friendships are forged by important shared characteristics such as trust, sincerity, kindness, compassion—we could go on! Emphasize these shared values in your relationship instead of focusing solely on your friend’s political beliefs.

As you get to know your communist friend better, you may discover that you share more common ground than you initially anticipated. Recognizing these overlaps and appreciating the unique perspectives your friend brings to specific issues may even broaden your own horizons.

In Conclusion

Accepting a communist friend is like embracing any other individual with different beliefs. It requires empathy, curiosity, and a desire to understand. By educating yourself on communism, engaging in open-minded conversations, and focusing on shared values and common ground, you can create the space and acceptance needed for a strong and understanding friendship. Remember that it’s our individuality—our distinct values, experiences, identities—that ultimately enriches our connections with others.
