Growing garlic in water is an alternative way to enjoy fresh, homegrown garlic without the need for soil or a garden. This method is perfect for people with limited space or those who are interested in indoor gardening. Follow these eight steps to grow garlic in water successfully:
1. Choose healthy garlic bulbs: Start by selecting large, healthy garlic bulbs from your local grocery store or farmers’ market. Look for bulbs that are firm and free from any visible damage or signs of disease.
2. Separate the cloves: Gently break apart the bulb into individual cloves without damaging them. Each clove will become a new plant, so you’ll want to separate as many as you’d like to grow.
3. Prepare the cloves for sprouting: Place the cloves in a container with a little water (just enough to cover the bottom). Make sure the pointed end of each clove is facing up, as this is where the new growth will emerge. Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap and let it sit in a cool, dark place for 24-48 hours.
4. Set up your growing container: Choose a container with a wide opening and enough depth to accommodate at least 4 inches of water. Fill it with clean water and add some pebbles or marbles at the bottom to help anchor the garlic cloves as they grow.
5. Transfer sprouted cloves into the growing container: After 24-48 hours, you should notice some green shoots emerging from the pointed ends of the cloves. Carefully transfer each sprouted clove into the growing container, anchoring them in between the pebbles or marbles so that just their base touches the water.
6. Provide plenty of light: Place your growing container near a sunny windowsill or under artificial light sources such as LED grow lights or fluorescent lights. Garlic plants need at least 6-8 hours of light daily to grow properly.
7. Change the water regularly: To prevent the water from becoming stagnant and encouraging bacterial growth, change it every few days or when it becomes cloudy. When you change the water, you can also rinse the container and pebbles or marbles to keep everything clean.
8. Harvest your garlic greens: Once the garlic shoots have grown to about 6-8 inches in height, you can start harvesting them by snipping off the tops with a pair of scissors. Leave about 2 inches of growth on each plant so they can continue to grow. You can use these fresh garlic greens in your cooking for a delicious, mild garlic flavor.
By following these eight steps, you’ll be able to grow your own garlic in water and enjoy the benefits of fresh, homegrown garlic greens all year round!
