How to calculate gre score

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that measures your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills. It is a crucial component of graduate school applications and plays a significant role in determining which schools you may be admitted to. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate your GRE score and provide some tips on how to interpret your results.

1. Understanding the scoring system

The GRE consists of three sections: Verbal Reasoning (130-170), Quantitative Reasoning (130-170), and Analytical Writing (0-6). The scores for the Verbal and Quantitative sections are reported separately on a scale of 130 to 170, in one-point increments. The Analytical Writing score is reported on a scale of 0 to 6, in half-point increments.

2. Calculating your raw scores

In order to calculate your GRE score, you’ll need to determine the number of correct answers for each section (excluding any experimental questions). Each correct answer contributes one point towards your raw score for that section.

3. Converting raw scores into scaled scores

Next, convert the raw scores from the Verbal and Quantitative sections into their scaled counterparts using an Equating process that ETS provides on its official website. This process accounts for minor variations in difficulty among different test editions or test-takers and ensures comparability between different test dates.

4. Analytical Writing Assessment

Two trained graders will evaluate each of your essays using a six-point holistic scale based on specific criteria such as clarity, coherence, development of ideas, etc. The final Analytical Writing score is the average score of these two graders’ evaluations rounded up to the nearest half-point increment.

5. Interpreting your scores

After calculating your three-section scores, you can evaluate them by comparing them to the average scores of accepted applicants for the graduate programs you are interested in. This information can be found on university websites, forums, or specialized GRE score analysis websites. Keep in mind that a high GRE score alone may not guarantee your chance of admission as many other aspects like GPA, work experience, and essays also contribute to your overall application.

Conclusion:

Calculating your GRE score is essential to determine where you stand among other applicants for graduate programs. By understanding your scores, you can make informed decisions about which schools to apply to or whether you should retake the test for better results. Lastly, remember that a holistic approach is necessary when applying to graduate schools, and impeccable essays, solid extracurriculars, and strong recommendations can further bolster your chances of acceptance.
