Cottage pie is a delicious and hearty meal that consists of a rich and savory ground beef filling, topped with a layer of creamy mashed potatoes and baked to perfection. It’s the ultimate comfort food that you can enjoy with your family. In this article, we’ll share an easy cottage pie recipe that will have your taste buds dancing with delight.

Ingredients:

For the filling:

– 1 lb ground beef

– 1 medium onion, chopped

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– 2 carrots, peeled and diced

– 1 cup frozen peas

– 2 tbsp tomato paste

– 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

– 1 cup beef broth

– 2 tsp fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme

– Salt and pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

– 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and quartered

– ½ cup milk, warmed

– ¼ cup butter, melted

– 1 large egg yolk

– Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain any excess grease.

3. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.

4. Add the carrots, peas, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well and simmer for around 10 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the sauce has thickened.

5. While the filling is cooking, prepare the mashed potatoes by boiling them in a pot of salted water for about 15 minutes or until they are fork-tender.

6. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash them using a potato masher, and then add the warmed milk, melted butter, egg yolk, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy.

7. Spoon the beef filling into a casserole dish or deep pie dish. Top it evenly with the mashed potatoes, spreading them out with a fork to create an even layer.

8. Bake the cottage pie in your preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and bubbly.

9. Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade cottage pie!

In summary, this easy cottage pie recipe is a surefire way to impress your loved ones at dinner time. It’s simple to prepare and packed with flavor. The next time you’re craving a comforting meal, give this scrumptious cottage pie a try!
