Do Blackouts Affect Homes With Solar Panels? Sometimes

Solar energy has become increasingly popular due to its eco-friendly nature and its potential to save on energy costs. Many homeowners are now installing solar panels on their roofs to generate clean, renewable electricity. One question that frequently arises is whether blackouts affect homes with solar panels. The answer is that it depends on the type of solar system, the battery storage system, and the nature of the blackout event.

Grid-Tied Solar Systems

The majority of residential solar panel installations are grid-tied or connected to the local power grid. These systems generate electricity during daylight hours and send any excess power back to the grid. In return, homeowners receive credits on their utility bill for contributing power to the grid.

In the case of a blackout, however, homes with grid-tied systems will not have electricity because these systems automatically shut down when there is a power outage. This is due to safety regulations that protect utility workers from “backfeed” while repairing damaged lines. Consequently, even though your solar panels are generating electricity during daylight hours, your home will still be without power
Solar Systems with Battery Storage.

A battery storage system can be a solution for those concerned about how blackouts may affect their solar-powered homes. Battery storage allows homes to have uninterrupted power supply during blackouts by storing excess energy produced by their solar panels, rather than feeding it back into the grid. This type of system is known as an off-grid or hybrid solar system depending on whether it has any connection to the local power grid.

During a blackout, homes with battery storage can continue to draw energy from their stored reserves. However, not all battery storage systems can provide power throughout an extended outage lasting multiple days. The ability of your home’s battery storage to last through a blackout depends on factors such as battery capacity, energy usage habits, and available sunlight for recharging.

Conclusion

Homes with solar panels are not immune to blackouts. In the case of grid-tied systems, a power outage will affect solar-powered homes just like any other. However, with battery storage systems, homeowners can expect to have a more reliable source of power during a blackout. Investing in a solar energy system with battery storage can offer greater energy security and independence when it comes to power outages.
