Chrome Sound Not Working in Windows? Here’s the Fix

Google Chrome is a widely-used browser due to its user-friendly interface and numerous features. It also supports various multimedia formats, including audio and video playback. However, there are times when Chrome sound may not work in Windows. This can be frustrating, particularly when you rely on the browser for streaming music or videos. Fortunately, there are several potential fixes for sound issues in Chrome on Windows.

1. Check Chrome Audio Settings

Before trying other solutions, ensure that the audio settings in Chrome are correctly configured. Sometimes, Chrome sound may not work due to a user’s choice in the browser’s settings. To check the audio settings in Chrome, click on the three-dot menu in the browser’s upper-right corner and select Settings > Privacy andSecurity > Site Settings > Sound. Ensure that the permission to use sound is enabled for the website you are accessing.

2. Check Windows Audio Settings

Chrome sound may not work in Windows due to issues with the operating system’s audio settings. Therefore, it’s worth checking the Windows sound settings to ensure everything is set up correctly. To do this, navigate to the Windows Sound Settings by right-clicking on the volume icon in the taskbar, selecting Sound Settings, and choosing the device you want to use. Ensure that the correct audio device is selected as the default, and its volume is not muted or set too low.

3. Clear Chrome Cache and Cookies

Another solution to Chrome not working in Windows is to clear the browser cache and cookies that can accumulate over time, slowing down the browser’s performance. To do this, open Chrome, click on the three-dot menu, select More Tools -> Clear browsing data. Check Clear browsing history, Clear cached images and files, and Cookies and other site data, and set the time range to All time.

4. Disable Extensions

If none of the above solutions work, consider disabling extensions in Chrome. Extensions can interfere with the browser’s sound settings, resulting in no sound. To turn off Chrome extensions, click the three-dot icon, hover over More tools, then click Extensions. Click the blue toggle switch beside each extension to temporarily disable them one-by-one.
