Introduction:

Charoset is a traditional dish enjoyed during the Jewish holiday of Passover. This sweet and delicious mixture of fruits, nuts, and spices symbolizes the mortar used by the Israelites during their enslavement in Egypt. In this article, we’ll explore how to make traditional apple-walnut charoset.

Ingredients:

– 3 large apples (preferably a sweet variety like Gala or Fuji)

– 1 cup finely chopped walnuts

– 1/2 cup sweet red wine (such as Manischewitz)

– 1/4 cup sugar or honey

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

– 1 cup raisins or chopped dried figs (optional)

Instructions:

1. Peel, core, and finely dice the apples. You can also grate them on the large holes of a box grater for a more textured charoset.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the diced apples with the finely chopped walnuts.

3. Add in the sweet red wine, sugar or honey, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves. Stir well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.

4. If desired, mix in raisins or chopped dried figs for added texture and flavor. You can adjust the sweetness level to taste by adding more sugar or honey if necessary.

5. Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together for a more cohesive taste.

6. Serve your apple-walnut charoset in a decorative dish alongside other Passover dishes such as matzo and horseradish.

Conclusion:

Traditional apple-walnut charoset is both symbolic and delectable, representing an important part of Passover celebrations while satisfying your sweet tooth. With just a few simple ingredients, this recipe is sure to become a staple at your Passover table for years to come. Enjoy!
