7 Simple Ways to Care for Olive Wood

Olive wood is highly valued for its beautiful grain and durability, making it a popular choice for utensils, cutting boards, and other kitchen items. However, to maintain its beauty and longevity, proper care is essential. Here are seven simple ways to care for your olive wood products.

1. Hand wash only: While olive wood products are durable, they should be hand washed with warm water and a mild soap after use. Avoid using the dishwasher, as the high heat and harsh detergents can cause the wood to dry out and crack.

2. Dry immediately: After washing, it’s crucial to dry your olive wood items immediately with a soft cloth. Allowing them to air dry can lead to warping or cracking over time.

3. Oil regularly: Olive wood needs regular oiling to nourish the wood and maintain its lustrous appearance. Using a food-safe mineral oil or beeswax-based product, apply a thin layer of oil to your items once every one or two months or when they start looking dull.

4. Avoid soaking: Never soak your olive wood products in water, as this can lead to warping and splitting. If food particles are stuck to the surface, gently scrape them off with a wooden or plastic scraper rather than soaking the item.

5. Store properly: Store your olive wood items in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. High heat and humidity can cause the wood to warp or crack.

6. Use gentle tools: When using your olive wood utensils or cutting boards, opt for non-abrasive tools like wooden or silicone spatulas instead of metal ones that could potentially scratch the surface.

7. Watch out for heat: While olive wood is known for its heat resistance, exposing it to high temperatures for extended periods can still cause damage. Avoid placing hot pots or pans directly on your olive wood cutting boards or trivets.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your olive wood items remain beautiful and functional for years to come. Investing in proper care not only preserves the aesthetic qualities of these pieces but also enables you to fully enjoy the experience of using them in your daily life.
