Verrucas, commonly known as plantar warts, are non-cancerous growths that develop on the soles of the feet due to infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). These can be painful, uncomfortable, and quite persistent. The good news is that there are several methods available for removing verrucas. We have outlined five effective and safe techniques for a pain-free experience.

1. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that is commonly used to treat verrucas. It helps to break down the skin cells and dissolve the wart tissue. Apply a small amount of salicylic acid gel or ointment directly on the verruca once or twice daily, following the instructions provided with the product. It may take several weeks for the treatment to work, but it’s essential to be consistent and patient throughout the process.

2. Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves freezing the verruca using liquid nitrogen, causing it to turn black and fall off within a week or two. This treatment should only be done by a qualified medical professional in a clinical setting. There might be a mild stinging sensation during the procedure, but it is generally well tolerated.

3. Duct Tape Occlusion Therapy

Duct tape occlusion therapy is a home remedy that can help get rid of verrucas by irritating and stimulating your immune system response against the growths. To perform this treatment method, clean and dry your foot and apply duct tape directly over the verruca. Leave it on for six days, then remove it and soak your foot in warm water before gently rubbing with an emery board or pumice stone. After 12 hours without duct tape, repeat this process until the verruca disappears.

4. Chemical Cauterization

Chemical cauterization is a medical procedure performed by a healthcare professional to remove verrucas. This technique involves the application of chemicals such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), cantharidin, or silver nitrate to the accumulated verruca tissue, causing it to turn white and eventually fall off. Chemical cauterization needs several sessions with week-long gaps in between.

5. Electrosurgery and Curettage

Electrosurgery and curettage are performed together by a professional in a clinical setting. Electrosurgery uses an electric current to burn off the verruca while curettage is the process of scraping away the dead tissue. Local anesthesia may be given prior to this procedure to minimize discomfort. It’s a highly effective method and reduces the likelihood of recurrence.

In conclusion, there are various techniques for removing verrucas ranging from home remedies to medical procedures. If you suspect you have a verruca, consult your healthcare provider to help determine the most appropriate course of action. Always follow their advice and instructions for the treatment method prescribed, and practice good foot hygiene to prevent future occurrences.
