Alabama is a refuge for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting an array of quaint small towns surrounded by the natural beauty of lush forests, rolling hills, and sparkling waterways. Here are seven of the best small towns that serve as gateways to adventure in the Heart of Dixie:

1.Mentone – Perched atop Lookout Mountain, Mentone is a charming retreat known for its scenic vistas, waterfalls like DeSoto Falls, and myriad hiking trails within DeSoto State Park.

2Fort Payne – Close to Little River Canyon National Preserve, Fort Payne is ideal for those who love canyon rims, water activities and discovering rare plant species.

3.Eufaula – Bordering Georgia, Eufaula is home to the expansive Lake Eufaula, nicknamed the “Bass Capital of the World,” and is perfect for fishing, boating, and wildlife observation in the adjacent Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge.

4.Scottsboro – Gateway to the Appalachian Mountains and nestled by Lake Guntersville, Scottsboro offers birdwatching at the North Alabama Birding Trail and antiquing opportunities after a long day of outdoor fun.

5.Guntersville – Situated on a 69,000-acre lake, this town offers plentiful fishing opportunities, especially for largemouth bass, as well as camping spots in Lake Guntersville State Park amid breathtaking lake views.

6.Fayette – With nearby Dismals Canyon offering guided night tours to see glowing insects and other natural wonders plus prime conditions for rock climbing and hiking, Fayette is excellent for discovering Alabama’s lesser-known marvels.

7.Fairhope – Located on the bluffs of Mobile Bay, Fairhope appeals to those who love sailing or leisurely sunset strolls along its scenic pier and thriving art community that’s deeply integrated with outdoor living.

These towns not only showcase Alabama’s diverse outdoor offerings but also capture the rich Southern charm and hospitality that make any visit memorable. Each town serves as a starting point for numerous adventures whether it’s hiking wooded trails or catching big bass on tranquil lakeshores.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
