4 Ways to Measure Countertops

Choosing the right countertop material and design is essential for any kitchen or bathroom renovation. One necessary step in the process is accurately measuring your countertops. Proper measurement ensures that your new countertops fit perfectly and securely in your space. In this article, we’ll discuss four ways to measure countertops, so you can make informed decisions when remodeling your kitchen or bathroom.

1. Make a Blueprint

Creating a simple blueprint of your countertops will help you visualize their dimensions and make accurate measurements. Start by sketching the layout of your kitchen or bathroom, including walls, cabinets, appliances, and sinks. Next, draw the countertops on top of the cabinets and indicate any angled or curved sections. Once your blueprint is complete, use a tape measure to measure each section lengthwise from end to end while noting these measurements on the blueprint. Remember to include any overhangs or cutouts for sinks and appliances.

2. Linear Feet Measurement

One straightforward method to measure countertops is by calculating linear feet. To do this, you’ll need to measure the total length of each section of countertop in inches, divide by 12 (to convert inches to feet), and then add all sections together. This technique only takes into account horizontal dimensions – it does not account for countertop depth or irregular shapes.

3. Square Footage Measurement

Calculating square footage ensures that you have enough material to cover the entire surface area of your desired countertops. Measure each section’s length and width in inches (also considering overhangs), then multiply these numbers together to get square inches for each section. Afterward, divide all calculated areas by 144 (in-square-feet) and sum them up to determine the total square footage needed. It’s important to note that square footage may not provide an accurate estimate for irregularly shaped counters like L-shapes or curved segments.

4. Measuring Template

A measuring template can provide the most accurate measurements for all countertop shapes and sizes. To create a template, lay out a large sheet of paper, plastic, or cardboard on your existing countertops and cut around the edges to create a replica of your counters’ shape. You can also use smaller pieces of material to measure individual sections and tape them together to form an accurate template. Once you have an exact match, engrave the measurements on the template and use it as a guide when purchasing and installing your new countertops.

In conclusion, accurately measuring your countertops is essential for a successful kitchen or bathroom renovation. By using one or more of these methods, you’ll have a clear understanding of your countertops’ dimensions, helping you make informed decisions when selecting materials and ensuring a perfect fit during installation.
