4 Ways to Deal Poker

Poker is a popular and widely-enjoyed card game, with countless variations and styles. Regardless of whether you’re playing Texas Hold’em, Omaha, or any other poker game, the basic foundation remains consistent – dealing the cards. While it may seem like a simple task, knowing how to properly deal is crucial to ensure a fair and enjoyable game for all players. In this article, we explore four ways to improve your poker dealing skills.

1. The Wash

Before diving into specific dealing techniques, it’s important to cover the basic step that comes before any dealing – the wash. The wash is a way of shuffling the cards that involves spreading them face-down on the table and mixing them around in a circular motion. This randomizes the deck and helps prevent any cheating or manipulation of cards during previous hands. Once all cards have been sufficiently mixed, gather them up and proceed with your chosen dealing technique.

2. The Riffle Shuffle

The riffle shuffle is one of the most popular methods for shuffling cards, not just in poker but in many card games. To execute this shuffle, split the deck into two equal halves and hold them vertically with one hand on each half. Apply pressure with your thumbs on the edges of each half that are closest to you while allowing the opposite edges to gently bend upwards. Release pressure slowly so that cards from both halves interlock with each other as they fall together on the table – ideally forming one cascading sequence.

3. The Overhand Shuffle

The overhand shuffle is another common method for shuffling cards and tends to be simpler than the riffle shuffle making it great for beginners. Hold the deck lengthwise in one hand with your thumb on one short edge and fingers on the other short edge, allowing cards to drop from your thumb into your other hand in controlled groups or individual cards. Mix the cards as you choose, using your free hand to guide the dropped sections in a crisscross pattern or another variety of positioning.

4. The Strip Shuffle

The strip shuffle (also known as the box shuffle) is a useful dealing technique, particularly for poker games with multiple rounds of betting and drawing. To perform a strip shuffle, split the deck into two roughly equal halves. Hold one half of the deck in each hand and “strip” 3-5 cards from the top of one half with your fingertips, placing these ripped cards onto the bottom of the other half. Continue this process until all cards have been mixed.

Practice Makes Perfect

Of course, mastering these dealing techniques requires practice and patience to ensure smooth, error-free shuffles and deals during each poker game. As you become more comfortable with each method, you can try combining different shuffles to create a unique, personal style that suits your poker dealing preferences. Properly dealing cards is an integral part of any enjoyable poker game – so practice your chosen techniques, gather your friends around the table, and enjoy a fair and exciting night of poker!
