What the Light Ring Colors on Your Amazon Echo Mean

If you own an Amazon Echo device, you might have noticed the light ring on the top of your device changes colors. This light ring is more than just a decorative addition to your Amazon Echo. It is an essential component that communicates status and other important information to users.

Here is what the different light ring colors mean.

  1. Blue

When the light ring on your Amazon Echo glows blue, it means the device is in listening mode, waiting for you to say the “Alexa” wake word. Once you say the wake word, the device springs to life, ready to answer your commands.

  1. Cyan

Cyan is the color that appears when you are adjusting the volume of your Echo device. If you tell Alexa to “turn up the volume,” the light ring will glow cyan and move in a circular motion as the sound increases.

  1. Yellow

Yellow typically means Alexa has a message or notification for you. For example, if you have an unplayed voicemail, the light ring will glow yellow until you listen to the message.

  1. Green

When the ring glows green, it means the device is in an active call or being used as an intercom. You might also see the green light ring while you are making a call with other Alexa-enabled devices.

  1. Red

Red is a warning that something is not quite right with your Echo device. It could mean the device’s microphone is off, or there’s some other problem that requires your attention.

  1. White

A white light means that the device is turned on and responding to your request. This may also happen during a software update on your device.

  1. Purple

A purple light ring indicates that the “Do Not Disturb” mode is turned on. This feature silences incoming calls, messages, and notifications.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
