What is Secure Socket Layer Server (SSL Server)?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a standard security protocol used for encrypting data transmitted between a client and a server to ensure safe communication over the internet. An SSL server is a type of server that has an SSL/TLS certificate installed, which helps create a secure connection between the web browser and the webserver. This type of server ensures that all data exchanged between the user and the server is encrypted and secure, making it difficult for hackers to get hold of sensitive information.

SSL/TLS is one of the most commonly used methods to protect sensitive information online. It is implemented across multiple industries and is especially pertinent in commercial activities where financial transactions and sensitive data are exchanged.

When a user interacts with a website that needs to be secure, they will see a padlock symbol in their browser, which indicates that the site is SSL certified. By clicking on this padlock icon, users can view the SSL certificate details, such as the provider and expiry date.

An SSL certificate is issued to a website after satisfying the required security protocols, and certificate authority confirms that the website operator is a legitimate entity. After obtaining an SSL certificate, the website installer installs it onto their webserver. This SSL certificate serves as a digital passport that authenticates the website and initiates a secure communication channel between the server and the client.

SSL works by encrypting the data with a secure code that is transmitted during the communication between the user’s web browser and the website’s server. It ensures that any personal or confidential information is securely transmitted over the internet without the risk of being intercepted or read by an unauthorized party.
