What is Resource Monitor (Resmon)?

Resource Monitor (Resmon) is a powerful management tool provided by Microsoft that allows you to monitor system resources such as CPU usage, RAM usage, network activity, and disk activity at a granular level. Resmon gathers real-time data from various sources on your system and presents this information in an easy-to-understand format that lets you identify which programs or processes are consuming too many resources.

Resmon is part of the Windows Operating System and can be accessed in several ways – the simplest of which is to type “resmon” in the Start menu or the Run dialog (Win + R) and hit enter. Once launched, the Resource Monitor displays a user-friendly interface with four tabs named Overview, CPU, Memory, and Disk. Let’s take a quick look at each of these tabs:

1. Overview – This tab provides a quick summary of ongoing processes, CPU usage, and memory usage for each process. It also shows the network and disk activity graphs, as well as the uptime duration of the computer.

2. CPU – This tab displays detailed information about the CPU usage of each process in the system, including the amount of processing time consumed, the priority level of the process, and the number of threads used by the process.

3. Memory – This tab displays information about the memory usage of each program and process in the system. It shows the total amount of physical memory used, virtual memory used, and the amount of memory consumed by each program/process.

4. Disk – This tab displays information about disk activity, including read and write speed, I/O activity, and the processes that are causing the most disk activity.

In addition to these tabs, Resmon also provides detailed information about active connections and network usage, and it lets you view a comprehensive list of all running processes, their handles, and associated services.

Resource Monitor is a valuable tool for system administrators, IT professionals, and advanced users who need to troubleshoot performance issues on their Windows systems. By using Resmon, you can easily identify the root cause of high CPU or memory usage, diagnose network and disk bottlenecks, and ensure that your system stays running smoothly.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
