What Is Apple’s ProMotion Display? Everything You Need to Know

Apple’s ProMotion display is a feature exclusive to its iPad Pro line of tablets. This display technology is designed to provide a smoother and more responsive experience, particularly when it comes to interactions with the touch screen. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at exactly what ProMotion is, how it works, and why it’s significant.

What is ProMotion?

At its core, ProMotion is a type of display technology that enables the iPad Pro’s screen to refresh at a rate of up to 120Hz. This is double the standard refresh rate of most displays, which typically refresh at 60Hz. In practical terms, this means that the iPad Pro’s screen can display up to 120 frames per second, while most screens are limited to 60 frames per second.

How does ProMotion work?

ProMotion technology relies on a combination of hardware and software. The iPad Pro’s display features a specialized display chip that can dynamically adjust the refresh rate based on what’s happening on the screen. For example, when you’re reading a static page of text, the refresh rate can be scaled back to conserve battery life. But when you’re scrolling through a fast-moving webpage or playing a high-intensity game, the refresh rate can be increased to provide a smoother experience.

Why is ProMotion important?

The increased refresh rate enabled by ProMotion technology has a number of benefits for iPad Pro users. First and foremost, it means that scrolling, swiping, and other touch interactions are incredibly smooth and responsive. This can be especially noticeable when using the Apple Pencil, as the technology that enables the Pencil to track movements and pressure relies heavily on the touch screen’s responsiveness.

In addition to improving touch interactions, ProMotion can also benefit other activities such as watching videos or playing games. Because the display can refresh at such a fast rate, motion looks smoother and more natural, and there’s less chance of motion blur or other visual artifacts.

What devices have ProMotion?

Currently, ProMotion technology is exclusive to the iPad Pro line of tablets. Specifically, it’s available on the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation and later) and the iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later).
