What Are Freemium Games?

In today’s digital age, it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t heard of the term “freemium”. Freemium is a model of offering a service or product for free while charging for additional features or services. Freemium games, in particular, are games that are free to download and play, but offer in-app purchases which allow for the acquisition of virtual currency, access to locked levels or special items, and other game-enhancing features.

The explosion of mobile gaming in the last decade has seen the rise of the freemium model. In fact, the majority of the most popular mobile games are freemium. Games such as Candy Crush Saga, Clash of Clans, and PUBG Mobile have all utilized this model to great success. Freemium games account for a significant portion of mobile game revenue, with Apple’s App Store generating over $12 billion from in-app purchases alone in 2020.

The reason for the popularity of freemium games is simple: it allows developers to reach a wider audience. By offering their game for free, they can attract players who may be hesitant to spend money on a game they are unfamiliar with. The free-to-play model also allows for players to try the game before deciding whether or not they want to invest in it.

Another advantage of the freemium model is that it creates a sense of competition among players. By offering in-app purchases, players are incentivized to spend real money to gain an advantage over their competition. This creates a cycle of competitiveness, with players eager to outdo each other through a combination of skill and investment.

However, there are also some drawbacks to the freemium model. In-app purchases can quickly become expensive, with some players spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on virtual items or currency. This has led to concerns about the ethics of freemium games, with some critics arguing that they are simply a new form of online gambling.

Overall, the rise of freemium games has transformed the mobile gaming industry. It has allowed for the creation of a wider variety of games, and has opened up gaming to players who may not have otherwise been able to afford it. However, there are also valid concerns about the business model, especially in regards to the potential exploitation of players. As with anything, it is important to be mindful of how much money we are willing to spend on these games and to always read the fine print before making a purchase.
