Tesla is widely known for its electric vehicles that have made a significant impact on the automotive industry. Along with the cars, the company has built a network of charging stations for its customers to use to keep their vehicles charged. Tesla has two types of charging stations: Superchargers and Destination Chargers. While the two types of chargers can both keep Teslas charged, there are some significant differences between them.

Supercharger Stations

Superchargers are designed for quick charging and are generally located near major highways and in high-traffic areas that are convenient for long-distance travel. These charging stations use a high-powered 480-volt DC charging system, delivering a maximum charging speed of 120 kilowatts. This means that the Supercharger can add up to 300 miles of range to a Tesla in as little as 30 minutes. Superchargers are free to use for Tesla owners, but only for long-distance travel. The stations are not meant for everyday use as they are designed to be used infrequently to prevent battery degradation.

Destination Charger Stations

The Destination Charger is meant to provide convenient, slow charging at hotels, restaurants, and other locations that Tesla drivers might visit. Unlike the Supercharger, the Destination Charger uses AC charging, which is less powerful but still effective at charging the vehicle over an extended period. Destination Chargers are typically installed by Tesla or one of its partners and are often available to Tesla drivers at no additional cost.

The primary difference between Superchargers and Destination Chargers is the intended use case. Superchargers are for long-distance travel only and are equipped with powerful charging stations capable of replenishing a Tesla’s battery quickly. Destination Chargers are mainly for stationary overnight charging, where Tesla drivers can park their vehicles and allow them to charge slowly overnight while they rest. The Destination Charger is designed to provide a convenient charging solution for Tesla drives while they take a rest break, shop, or have a meal.
