Simple Ways to Buy BART Tickets: 6 Steps

Are you planning on using the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to navigate the San Francisco Bay Area? One of the first things you’ll need is a BART ticket. However, if you’re new to the system or haven’t used it in a while, don’t worry – buying a BART ticket is easy. Here are six simple steps to buy a BART ticket:

1. Locate a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM):

BART stations are equipped with TVMs, which are usually located near the entrance or waiting area. These machines dispense paper tickets and Clipper cards that can be used for travel on BART.

2. Choose Ticket Type:

There are two types of BART tickets: paper tickets and Clipper cards. Paper tickets are for single use or limited trips, while Clipper cards are reusable and can store multiple forms of transit fares. Decide which is best suited for your needs; paper tickets are ideal for occasional riders, while regular commuters should opt for a Clipper card.

3. Select Fare Amount:

The cost of a BART trip depends on the distance traveled between stations and ranges from $2-15. Determine your fare by using the fare chart displayed at the TVM or by visiting the BART website. When you know the fare amount, press the corresponding button on the machine.

4. Insert Payment:

BART TVMs accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards as payment options. Once you’ve chosen your payment method, insert it into the designated slot on the machine. If paying with cash, TVMs do not give change so be sure to use exact change if possible.

5. Grab Your Ticket or Clipper Card:

Once your payment has been accepted, your ticket or Clipper card will be dispensed from the machine. Take it and make sure that it has been properly loaded with your desired fare amount.

6. Remember to “Tap in” and “Tap out”:

For paper ticket users, insert your ticket into the designated slot at the fare gate when entering and exiting a BART station. The machine will deduct the appropriate fare and return the ticket to you. Clipper card users simply have to place their card on the card reader, available at every gate.

That’s it – six simple steps to buy BART tickets! Now you’re all set to explore the San Francisco Bay Area using one of its most convenient transportation methods.
