In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, PUBG publisher Krafton has acquired Tango Gameworks, the studio behind critically acclaimed titles like “The Evil Within” and the recently released “Hi-Fi Rush.” This acquisition comes as a surprise, especially considering Microsoft’s previously announced plans to shut down Tango Gameworks in May 2024.

The acquisition details haven’t been disclosed, but the deal sees Krafton acquiring both the studio and its highly praised IP, “Hi-Fi Rush.” The rhythm-action title, which launched in January 2023, was a critical and commercial success, garnering praise for its unique gameplay and vibrant art style.

This move signals a significant shift in Krafton’s strategy. While known for their popular battle royale game “PUBG,” the acquisition suggests they are actively seeking to diversify their portfolio and enter the narrative-driven single-player market.

For Tango Gameworks, the acquisition offers a lifeline, saving them from closure and potentially opening up new opportunities. It’s unclear what this means for the studio’s future projects, but fans can hope that Krafton will allow them to continue exploring innovative and creative titles.

The acquisition also raises questions about Microsoft’s decision to shut down Tango Gameworks in the first place. While the company hasn’t officially commented on the acquisition, it’s likely to be seen as a missed opportunity and a potential blow to their own ambitions in the gaming space.

This unexpected move by Krafton highlights the rapidly evolving landscape of the gaming industry. It demonstrates that even established studios are not immune to change, and that players can expect surprises and shifts in power dynamics in the coming years.
