Motorola Moto G4 review: An unbeatable Android bargain

In a sea of smartphones offering impressive features and steadily climbing prices, the Motorola Moto G4 stands as a beacon of affordability and efficiency. Released in 2016, this device is an unbeatable Android bargain that continues to impress users with its reliable performance and commendable specs. Here’s our detailed review.

Design and Display

The Moto G4 sports a slim profile, measuring just 9.8mm in thickness and weighing around 155g. The design is simple yet attractive, with a curved back providing a comfortable grip in hand. The removable back cover reveals dual SIM card slots and a microSD card slot, making it adaptable for various users.

The display is equally noteworthy, featuring a 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen with a 1920×1080 resolution and 401ppi density. With vibrant colors and sharp images, the screen’s quality exceeds expectations given the phone’s budget-friendly price.

Performance and Software

Under the hood, the Moto G4 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor along with an Adreno 405 GPU. The device comes in two variant options: a 2GB RAM model with 16GB storage, or a 3GB RAM model with 32GB storage—both expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

Despite its age, the smartphone performs smoothly enough for everyday use. Multitasking and running basic apps are relatively seamless. Although not suitable for heavy gaming or handling resource-intensive apps, the model still offers decent performance for casual users.

Running on Android Marshmallow out of the box, Motorola provides near-stock Android experience with minimal bloatware and useful add-ons through the Moto app. This app includes features such as Moto Display (for quick notifications) and Moto Actions (for gesture controls).

Camera

Equipped with a 13MP rear camera, the Moto G4 produces satisfactory images under favorable lighting conditions. Photos taken in daylight have good levels of detail and color accuracy, but low-light performance is hindered by noticeable graininess and less-than-sharp details. The 5MP front-facing camera, on the other hand, suffices for average selfies or video calls.

Battery Life

One of the more impressive aspects of this budget-friendly device is the 3,000mAh battery. It’s capable of lasting a full day under moderate usage, and inactivity periods see minimal battery drain. Quick charging support is a boon, replenishing the battery to near capacity in just over an
hour.

Final Verdict

While it may now be considered a dated device in comparison to more recent releases, the Motorola Moto G4 continues to reign as an unbeatable Android bargain for those with budget constraints. Offering satisfactory performance, a commendable display, and decent battery life, it remains an appealing option for anyone seeking an affordable yet reliable day-to-day smartphone experience.
