Meta Overhauls Youth Safety Settings to Improve Your Teen’s Well-Being
Meta Platforms Inc. is taking significant steps to enhance the online safety of younger audiences on its platforms, reflecting a broader commitment to youth well-being in digital spaces. Amid growing concerns from parents, regulators, and advocacy groups about the impact of social media on teens, Meta has introduced comprehensive changes to the way teens interact with its services, including Instagram and Facebook.
The overhaul includes changes that make it harder for potentially suspicious adult accounts to find or connect with teenagers. Adults who have been blocked or reported by a young person will not be able to see that teen’s profile in their ‘People You May Know’ suggestions. Furthermore, Meta is deploying new technologies aimed at identifying and removing accounts that exhibit suspicious behavior.
Another significant improvement is encouraging teens to regularly review their privacy settings. Instagram now sends notifications prompting younger users to update their privacy settings, ensuring they’re aware of who can see their content, who can contact them, and how their information is possibly being shared.
To further shield teens from inappropriate content and unwanted interactions, Instagram has modified its default settings for new users under 16 (or under 18 in certain countries), ensuring that their accounts start as private. This means they have to proactively choose to have a public account where anyone can view their content or send direct messages.
Messaging protections have also been stepped up—teenagers will receive safety notices when an adult who has been exhibiting potentially suspicious behavior is interacting with them in Direct Messaging (DM). These notices provide advice and suggest actions like blocking or reporting the person.
In addition to these measures, Meta’s commitment extends into education and partnerships with experts. They’re collaborating extensively with youth activists, mental health experts, and anti-bullying organizations to refine their approach to youth safety. Together with these partners, they’ve developed educational materials aiming to empower teens and their families to better understand and navigate social media risks.
These interventions are part of a larger conversation about the responsibilities of social media companies to protect younger audiences amidst worries about online predators, exposure to harmful content, and the broader impact of social media on mental health.
