As the battle between Android and iOS continues to dominate the smartphone world, there are some users who are looking for something different. Linux-based operating systems for smartphones might sound like a niche market, but it’s growing steadily. With its open-source software and community support, Linux-based mobile operating systems offer unique features that traditional smartphone OSes can’t match.

Here are some popular Linux smartphone operating systems that you can install on your device:

1. Ubuntu Touch

Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. It offers a unique interface that’s designed for smartphones and tablets. The interface is fully gesture-based, making it easy to navigate with one hand. Ubuntu Touch also supports convergence, which means it can switch between a mobile and desktop mode depending on how you’re using the device.

2. Sailfish OS

Sailfish OS is a mobile operating system developed by the Finnish company Jolla. It’s based on the open-source Mer project, and it’s designed to work with Android apps. Sailfish OS offers a simple and intuitive user interface, and it comes with a number of unique features such as gesture-based navigation and support for multiple user profiles.

3. LineageOS

LineageOS is a free and open-source operating system for smartphones and tablets. It’s based on the popular Android operating system, but it offers more customization options and security features. LineageOS is compatible with a wide range of devices, and it’s popular among users who want to keep their devices up to date with the latest security patches.

4. Plasma Mobile

‘Plasma Mobile is a Linux-based mobile operating system developed by the KDE community. It’s designed to offer a modern, gesture-based user interface that works well on smartphones and tablets. Plasma Mobile comes with a range of KDE applications, and it supports convergence, which means you can use it on your desktop and mobile devices.

5. PostmarketOS

PostmarketOS is a free and open-source operating system designed for smartphones and other mobile devices. It’s based on Alpine Linux and uses the mainline Linux kernel, which means it’s more secure and better optimized for mobile use than traditional Android-based operating systems. PostmarketOS is still in development, but it’s already available for a range of devices.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
