Leveraging Learner Variability To Elevate Equity In Edtech

All classrooms are sure to have their fair share of challenges and issues. For example, students’ various learning styles and techniques pose a problem for the teacher, as he/she will have to adapt lessons to suit everybody in the class.

Learner variability is a term used to describe the uniqueness and differences of all learners. Teachers should design their curriculum and lessons to supplement all learning styles, allowing every student to thrive and grow while in school.

This article will discuss how teachers can leverage learner variability to elevate equity in edtech.

Edtech In the Classroom

Edtech, or educational technology, is a term used to describe technology or electronic devices to enhance learning in the classroom. Teachers and schools worldwide are beginning to incorporate modern technology into their syllabus for various reasons.

Studies have found that most students respond way better to lessons when they are taught using technology. However, with that being said, a few students prefer the old-fashioned way of learning (face-to-face teaching). More so, some students do not absorb information well when presented to them through an image or video.

For this reason, edtech is not favored by all children, making it critical that teachers find ways to suit this learner variability during their lessons.

Using Various Apps and Tools To Suit Learner Variability

There are various apps and tools that teachers can use to suit learner variability. For example, the new Pedagogue app allows students to access work from any remote location. This serves students who work better independently, as they can complete schoolwork in their own time.

Certain children will absorb information very well when it is presented to them in a video format. For this reason, using apps such as YouTube will be very beneficial to some. However, as we have already mentioned, not all students respond well to these sorts of lessons, meaning teachers should also incorporate other formats, such as face-to-face teaching.

Elevating Equity In Edtech

Teachers must find a way to elevate equity when using edtech in the classroom. As we have discussed, they can do this by using various apps and tools that will suit students’ different learning styles.

More so, educators must find a balance between using edtech and face-to-face teaching. While technology is great for extra practice, revision, and explaining work more thoroughly, the teacher still needs to interact with the students and help them if there are any issues.

Concluding Thoughts

Many schools and teachers are turning to edtech to provide students with more engaging and versatile lessons. However, educators must incorporate edtech in a way that suits the learner variability in the classroom.

They can do this by using various apps and tools that supplement students’ many learning styles and techniques. More so, they should ensure that technology is not too heavily relied on for lessons.
